Your Assignment

Research Paper

You will write a 2,000–2,500 word research paper in which you will argue for why a director of your choosing should be added to the syllabus. This specific argument will need to be bolstered by primary source research that aids in your analysis of films in the director’s oeuvre. You are also required to theorize how your chosen director relates to auteur theory.

Consider:

  • Directorial Signature
  • Film Analysis
  • Auteur Theory

Focus your argument about the director through one (max two) of these puzzle pieces:

  • Genre or Category
  • Artistic Movements
  • Style
  • Industrial Factors
  • Historical Context
  • Personal Identify & Viewpoint
  • Themes

Required Sources

Cite the following sources in Chicago Citation Style:

  • 1-2 films by your chosen director
  • At least 2 primary sources that help you analyze your film(s) or filmmaker
  • 1 reading related to auteur theory
  • At least 10 scholarly sources
