About the Author

photo of Ted Chiang, photo credit to Alan Berner Ted Chiang is a writer of science fiction who has won numerous awards for his short stories and novellas. His short story "Story of Your Life" was adapted into the 2016 film Arrival. In the video below, Shelley Streeby, Director of the Clarion Science Fiction Workshop at UC San Diego, interviews Chiang about his work and the role of science fiction in constructing our own future world.

Co-sponsored by SBCC and UCSB, this interdisciplinary discussion of Exhalation: Stories by Ted Chiang will include panelists Rudy Busto (Religious Studies), erin Khuê Ninh (Asian American Studies), Misha Sra (Computer Science), and Sharon Tettegah (Black Studies). Moderated by David Weld (Physics). The event will be captioned.

Co-sponsored by UCSB Library and the Center for Innovative Teaching, Research, and Learning (CITRAL) this moderated discussion will explore incorporating the 2022 Reads book into a course. Panelists include Tim Dewar (Gervirtz Graduate School of Education), Brian Donnelly (English), Kathy Foltz (Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology), Behrooz Parhami (Electrical & Computer Engineering), and Kathy Patterson (Writing Program). Moderated by Elina Salminen (CITRAL).
